Chemical Dependency Counselor (Remote from own home)
Job Description
This position supports A New Leaf Mental Health and Wellness Center’s philosophy of patient centered care by providing individual, family, and group counseling and therapy to patients with substance abuse related issues served VIA telephone or other approved media. Hired candidates will work from their home and access our facility remotely for meetings or updates to our program. All patients seen will be served from your home VIA media services, no need to come into Cedar Rapids office.
Position Specific Duties
- Perform substance abuse evaluations including assessment interviewing and appropriate application of screening instruments and DSM – 5 substance use disorder criteria
- Match clients to treatment using ASAM criteria
- Provide consultations to people seeking information about substance abuse and mental health issues
- Develop treatment plans and treatment objectives in collaboration with client and concerned others
- Work in coordination with area service agencies, schools, primary care providers, and other relevant resources to address needs of persons with substance abuse and mental health disorders
- Maintain appropriate professional licensure, certificates, and credentials
- Provide, facilitate, and supervise individual and group counseling
- Document all client records using iSmart, EMR, ARTS, and other record-keeping tools
- Maintain client biopsychosocial histories, ongoing assessment and evaluation tools, and case records according to established guidelines
- Attend and participate in staffing meetings
Essential Functions
- Provides counseling to clients individually by way of Telephone or approved media sessions to assist in overcoming chemical dependencies, adjusting to life, and making desired changes
- Completes and maintains accurate records and reports regarding client histories and progress, services provided, and other required information, including ASAM’s and required drug testing
- Reviews and evaluates client progress in relation to measurable goals described in treatment plans and shares this information at client staffing meetings
- Develops client treatment plans based on updated substance abuse research, clinical experience, and client histories
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrated strong theoretical training and counseling technique and ethical decision-making
- Demonstrated ability to provide competent and effective therapeutic interventions
- Demonstrated ability to provide therapeutic environment to clients from all backgrounds using empathy and understanding of cultural diversity
Professional Experience
- Documented experience working in substance abuse or mental health field
- Experience in developing and presenting behavioral health training topics to community groups
- Experience in presenting behavioral health information in an educational setting
Education
- AS, Bachelor’s, Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or other related human service field of study
- Specialized training in individual, group, and family therapy
- Specific coursework related to substance abuse or mental health and treatment
- Each treatment staff member shall complete two hours of training related to the identification and reporting of child abuse and dependent adult abuse within six months of initial employment and at least two hours of additional training every five years thereafter
- Each treatment staff member will attend A New Leaf Mental Health and Wellness Center’s approved six hour ethics training
Licensure, Certification, Registration
- Current licensure or certification in the state of Iowa (LMSW, LMFT, LMHC, CADC, or IADC)

Salary: $30.00 to $45.00 /hour
